I was five and I found an unexploded bomb. I could see the little clock ticking away, so I ran off and fetched a half brick. I then smashed the little clock with the brick until it stopped moving.
I had saved our local area, I would have been a hero if anyone found out, but I was too shy to tell anyone. The bomb never went off, and I duly forgot all about it.
When I grew up and reflected back on it, it became obvious that it was not a bomb, but a gas meter.
lol I used to think only men could be doctors and women could be nurses. I was happy when I found out women could be doctors, too.. and men could be nurses!
I used to believe in the typical things, Santa, Tooth Fairy... and then we also had Elijah. I would grow very skeptical, though, and I would look for proof of their visits/existence.
For those who do not know about Elijah, he visits dinner on Passover. You leave a door slightly open to let him in, and then you leave him some wine to drink lol my family members would take turns drinking the wine while the kids aren't looking and pretend it was him, but I remember one year I found lipstick marks on the glass....

Here's a good explanation of the custom by someone who would know more than me about it lol to me it was just tradition more than a religious thing.
I love that you all had these cute beliefs. I honestly cannot remember believing in anything like tooth faries or Easter bunnies..
I blame overly honest parents.
I'm one of those parents. My oldest asked 6 years ago and just had to know if Santa was real. The whole story bothered him because it seemed implausible.
It was a point where I knew I needed him to trust me then and going forward, that we'd have problems if I felt I had to lie to him about something like that. Also, I was uncomfortable with the lie myself! So I told the truth, and gradually there were none of those things without them being stated as stories.
Now they all love fantasy and imaginative tales, but they still don't get why adults would make up stories and insist they're true when they're not...
I am not sure what I believed when I was very little as, as far back as I remember, I have been very enquiring and investigative so tried to work out the truth behind everything. I do remember working out that Santa Claus couldn't be real so always tried to keep awake to see dad bring the presents. I never succeeded lol. I don't remember how old I was at that point though.

I do think it's important when children ask that we don't lie. When my eldest asked I told him the truth but my daughter was still very little so he helped mum keep the secret and make it lots of fun for her. My father was much more logical and simply stated that Christmas was a commercial holiday and the all of these things were simple window-dressing to get us to spend more. Explain that the Easter bunny was simply a pagan symbol of fertility and that the tooth fairy was nothing more than a cash gift to soothe children over their fears of losing teeth.
My granddaughter doesn't really believe in Santa anymore but I still send her personalised message from Santa from the portable North pole she likes it and it's just fun, we both know that.
my mother used to sing me this song: mummies are born with daisies, and daddies are born with snakes and for years afterwards, I generally thought my private part was called a "daisy". it was only when they did about it in school I got a bit of a shock... lol
When I was pregnant with my second child my eldest was 2 and he asked how the baby got in mummys tummy and how it came out and we told him in suitable language for his age but without fairies storks or gooseberry bush nonsense..
When I was expecting my daughter my eldest son then 6 took great joy and pride in explaining to his 4 year old brother exactly where the baby came from.. And my daughter was about 3 when she was educated in a far more natural way..
I came down one morning to find the children eating breakfast while sitting on the table looking out of the dining room window, watching the sheep mating... A few months later they sat and watched the lambs being born.. there was no mystery for them.

I wish I had believed those things, emily91: childhood should be a time of innocence and imagination. It is wonderful for a little girl - that you were - to have had an open mind and to have believed in Father Christmas and the toothfairy. Personally, I had scary beliefs: one was the monster hiding underneath the bed. And also the fear of something grabbing my ankle when walking across a pitch black room. Those beliefs were from me, though: my parents never encouraged such beliefs. They were just there. Again, though, I knew it was pretend but I loved the idea of Father Christmas and the toothfairy. Because it is important for a kid to grow up with an imagination. This also brings happiness in adult life.
