Realistic is a word that has to be considered for this, Cassie, and that is what you are doing.
Our dog is only 7 and gets ecstatically excited when we get ready to take her out for a walk. But since her arthritis we have cut back her walking lots, and she is a lot happier generally for it.
She loves walking, but we now have a realistic plan to keep her out of pain.
Cherry youre right realistic is all we can be and given the early age Ive lost other dogs Im just grateful for each day he is here.
Still no vomiting and a spoonful of mankua honey each day seems to have cured the cough that he had (the vet said old mans cough.. no cure)
On thursday I came home from shoping with my daughter she called out to him several times each getting louder as he didnt respond,, she started to fear the worst and then I stuck my head round the door and called BISCUITS.. His sleepy white head shot up from its pillow and he came running to greet us..Nose in the shopping bags and tail wagging furiously.. Not dead yet then!
Nice story, LOL. If we want instant attention "Squirrel" is the magic word.
I will keep that in mind for the honey.
Ours has now been on the Glucosamine and fish oil for a month, with little improvement. It was sad yesterday as we took her out for a 20 minute walk, and she was limping when we got back. But she is a very powerful dog still, so we cannot deny her some exercise, particularly when she would rather go for a walk than eat.
I tested her once, my daughter was taking her for a walk and she was skipping around waiting for her lead. So I put her breakfast out, she had a sniff and carried on springing around......
In her head, she was chanting "The walk!, The Walk! The walk!, The Walk! The walk!, The Walk! The walk!, The Walk! The walk!, The Walk! The walk!, The Walk!"

Everyone should love their dogs! Cher, when Cass said "Not dead yet then", I could have snuck The Lads in again, but didn't. You know the film I'm referring to.

We walked 2km in the forest on Sunday and another 2km at the common yesterday , he even told off and enthusiastic Rottweiler pup who was bouncing around..
Since cooking for him myself and giving him 1 teaspoon of honey at night he has 100% stopped being sick and his cough has been reduced by 99%..
He sleeps a lot but still walks 3 times a day and potters around in the garden inbetween times.
We almost lost ours yesterday, she is just back from emergency surgery to remove a septic womb.
She was fine yesterday. In fact at 5.00 we were just back from a long walk, and she had been full of zest. That squirrel in particular had only just made it to the tree. However, by 6 she was off her food and had rapid shallow breathing.
Anyway she looks a lot better now, but is rather miserable. No womb, or ovaries now to worry about.
Tell you what was funny though. We went to collect her last night, and after listening to the nurse telling us all about how she was and the op, and taking the money off of us, she went to fetch her.
If I can remind you briefly, she is a very large white with black spots dalmation?
Well, the nurse went through the door and when she returned she had brought a medium sized white spaniel with brown spots.
Just for a moment, I thought "OMG she looks awful, she has lost so much weight!"
When I told my SO later, I thought she was never going to stop laughing. pffffft
lol that's a silly story. Glad she is doing well... I get so scared when my dogs are sick! The money is worth it because you can't put a price on doing what you must to save your pets (family)!
Our dog was sent to bed tonight for hanging around too close to my feet while I was making dinner.
She always goes when told, but it is her who decides when she comes out lol Tonight was 5 minutes.
She is so well behaved. We were having a tv dinner, and the side table I use is low and teeny, she can actually look onto it. But I thought nothing of leaving my steak in front of her, as I went for a sharp knife.
The so was watching, and she just sat there staring at it.
I often leave food cooling in the kitchen overnight where she sleeps. She has never once taken it.
Oh my day just gets better and better. This afternoon at the park Murphy seemed to slip when running after a ball he walked home absolutely fine but since then he's refused to stand and he's in obvious pain so I'm on my way to the vets.

I am hoping for a bruise, and maybe a strain. Good luck.
The vet checked his walking and agreed its wooden and stiff but an examination of his pelvis, legs ,paws, joints showed no obvious problem or break, he didnt react until she touched the thigh muscle. So shes thinking its a strained muscle and shes given a painkiller jab and tablet but if he doesn't improve by Friday I have to go back and they will take xrays to get a better look. In any case they want an update on Monday.
This evening hes been quiet and sleepy but our main concern is that he doesn't seem to want to pee... OH is sleeping downstairs with him and will take him out in the night if he needs to. But if he doesn't pee in the morning then its straight back to the vet.

Bingo , he pee'd this morning and did a toilet. Never seen two people so happy to see a dog poo as us!
Its obvious he is feeling under the wether and his hip is painful but he has managed two gentle walks today so we are happy with that and he has eten his breakfast normally.
It has given me nightmares though, in 2009 it was Oscar who suddenly went through his back and dragged his legs behind him, with intense therapy from us including hydro and massages and help from the vet with seroid injections he did walk again but the strain on him caused him to develop a heart murmur which led to his early death.
I know its different, I know that Murphy has no history of heart murmur so the chances are he will be right as rain but it doesnt stop the worry.

So progress has been good and Murphy is off the painkillers today. We are still lifting him in and out of the car he isnt allowed off lead or running or jumping onto thhings. Its obvious that his leg isnt 100% but he has walked today without trouble so it seems gradually building up his exersize will be the way to go.
