For decades humanity has glamourized the exploration of space. From TV shows such as Star Trek to billionaires glorifying themselves in the pursuit to make such dreams a reality. Naturally referring to Elon Musk and SpaceX. However, there is a really real problem that I feel hasn't really been addressed by very many shows. Science fiction is important as they allowed for greater technological ideas to come forth. Needless to say that the technology from that one sixties show that boldly went where no one has gone before has essentially become reality. During the time of its initial airing I'm sure such devices like a PADD or other gadgets like communicators were thought to only be possible in the far future and now we have tablets and smartphones. While Star Trek attempted to portray a more positive vision of the future, not too many science fiction stories seem to focus on more dangerous or negative visions of the future. Both of which is important to serve as hope AND as potential warnings to programmers, designers, inventors, and whomever that creates about the potential to destroy.
A close friend family member of mine exposed me to the world of Mobile Suit Gundam. A Japanese anime with a wide array of stories dating back to the 1980's, but each with an underlying message. The sociological and economic impact that technology can impose on the world. I shall be focusing on one particular series, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, which follows the stories of a group of boys forced to become men in ways that aren't morally sound. There will be some slight spoilers so bare that in mind. Together they formed a new company, Tekkedan, to serve their family after taking over the prior one for which they worked against their will. They were referred to as space debris or sometimes human debris. Terms that essentially means slaves. Along the way they acquire the assistance of a politician named Kudelia Aina Bernstein who is also known as the "maiden of revolution" for desiring a free and independent Mars. A planet for which the boys reside.
This series only enhances my concerns regarding intergalactic politics and territory disputes. According to the Outer Space Treaty, formally agreed upon by the United Nations in 1966, the principals that govern it are as follows.
the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind;
outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States;
outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means;
States shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies or station them in outer space in any other manner;
the Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes;
astronauts shall be regarded as the envoys of mankind;
States shall be responsible for national space activities whether carried out by governmental or non-governmental entities;
States shall be liable for damage caused by their space objects;
And states shall avoid harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies.
Though what concerns me is that while nations may respect this treaty. Corporations on the other hand may find some underhanded way to not only circumnavigate these principals and/or claim exclusion from them. This would allow corporations to essentially neglect country laws which protect civil rights and liberties. In other words, the return of human slavery could be somewhere out in the stars. As corporations lay claim to areas of space and celestial bodies, they would eventually require their own sets of laws to ensure order is maintained. This would essentially imply the formation of new countries. Countries for whom may not consider the laws implemented back on Earth as essential to ensure the prosperity of human life. Especially since not even Earth laws are always entirely sound when it comes to such protections. I suppose the one thing that many science fiction writers and tech enthusiasts neglect in favor of a more positive outlook on the future is that space exploration may come with abuse of power and that perhaps countries in existence today, on Earth, could be a bit more responsible in the monitoring of space programs to ensure a more prosperous future for countries of tomorrow.

Wow, Leaf: your post is incredible. You've made me think: when people enter space, what laws will they follow? How will people be protected from laws beyond earth? Even today - with cyber technology - there are different laws with the use of the Internet. How do you police a network that supplies the entire planet? There are the cyberpolice and the suchlike who have to do this.
Technology has made life easier: but it has also made life more difficult and complicated.

It's probably not a wise decision to encourage the use of censorship to solve problems as it would only create more problems than it is worth. Censorship can hinder individual freedoms and lowers moral of people by giving them a feeling of forced confinement. The one thing that would likely work better is an improvement to the current education system in the United States as it's a massive joke influenced by dogma of people who for the life of them cannot grasp concepts beyond the reaches of their comprehension. Though an improvement on education would mean the house representatives and senators in the U.S. would have to actually serve the public's best interest instead of getting caught up in some sports game mentality of team versus team.
The internet is never going to be a safe space in its entirety. Attempting to create the greater cyber-space into something safe would be like attempting to establish a single code of laws in outer space. The important thing is to ensure there are communities out there that could serve as safe non-judgmental spaces for the denizens of the world wide web. To ensure that everyone is aware of some of the dos and don'ts that comes with online activity and basic knowledge like never handing out your personal information to strangers. Hacking and other cyber threats are another matter entirely that should be challenged by the most qualified individuals. Everything is prone to corruption, but encouraging more censorship is something that would for sure breed corruption. Any theocracy can serve as an example of why this is the case.

Oh doing things for the benefit of "all of mankind" sounds nice. But unless there is a practical military or monetary benefit, I doubt there would be much space research. Finders keepers.

Oh dear are you suggesting that branson and musk are greedy twats out to earn yet more, as if they didn't have enough already?
Money probably becomes less of an issue for such ultra-wealthy. But these are quite rare people.
I'm not certain if even robotic colonization can be financed by just a few. Maybe.
If they think they can make a profit........... and don't forget, a lot of this sort of thing is about product placement, and advertising, so it is tax deductable.

Can't be true...........
I think it becomes an addiction.. The power and wealth feeds the ego lol many of these types are very fragile, and yes, most wouldn't do things to save humanity unless it benefits them personally. I picture all the wealthy people taking a ship out of here and leaving the rest of us to die Even though they were likely the biggest reason we'd have to leave to begin with... by putting money before people and the environment.
One day we probably will need a new planet, so I hope we can find one, and I hope it won't be reserved for only the super wealthy, but that is how I picture it being... like all the dystopian movies/books.

Indeed, the value of money becomes meaningless to them. It's only use is as an indicator as to how well they have done in life.

Most of the world's currency is fiat money anyway. There could come a day when people see that it never really held any value that wasn't assigned by a collective of individuals that call themselves a government. This point was made in the sixth episode of the thirteenth episode of South Park titled Pinewood Derby. Just substitute "space cash" for any nation's currency.
Though I am surprised nobody ever attempted to illegally try to counterfeit dollars using a 3D printer. I'd imagine they'd get caught pretty easily since counterfeit 3D dollars are pretty too obvious, but the day someone feels bold enough to learn the secrets of mints is the day money starts to decrease in value. An interesting scenario to be sure though probably just a footnote in the history of money much like cryptocurrency.

Power and wealth IS addictive when you have it. Money entices you and casts a spell: making you think you're better than everyone else...
I don't have power or wealth: and maybe that is for the best.
Honestly, I wouldn't say that is the best. Someone out there would have to be immune to this spell. This is the thing whenever someone declares themselves woke. It's nice and everything, but wokeness doesn't really matter when you're broke. You need to support that wokeness with the color green because then you can actually changes things in society. Money is still needed and being rich can be the ultimate tool, but the person who becomes rich, born into wealth, or has always been rich would need to be immune to the spell.

The greediness that is often associated with wealth is also a very new concept within the capitalist system. Somewhere through it's history someone decided to hoard their money instead of investing back into their communities. This idea that you have to hoard would have been a foreign idea and often a frowned upon one during the gilded age. It was expected of those with wealth to give back to their communities which is why you see so many institutions where's origins date back to this time period with the founder's name. It was seen as a great shame to be hoarding your wealth to yourself.
Just another reason why I don't understand why people are angry at Mr. Beast for helping the blind. He's a rich man who looks to actually help people and somehow because of his reputation this somehow devalues the fact that there are likely blind people out there in the world who are now seeing the world for the first time. It's the one reason why cancel culture, despite at one point being used as a means of seeking justice, is now being abused by the younger generations into demonizing people to where they cannot even do something good for humanity for once.
A person could be the biggest pile of crap in the world and if they managed to do something that actually helps with the struggles of daily life for another then their deed deserves to be recognized. This does not mean you have to suddenly like the person or agree with them.
