Animals, including Wildlife & Insects

Squirrels are fun. Plenty visit my garden, and many more live in the woods at the back of my home.

On Monday I interfered a bit with the natural world. On my walk I noticed that a seagull was attacking a local bird in the middle of a field. The bird was attempting to get to the side of the field and safety in the trees but was being harrassed every time it took off and the seagull was swooping down on it when it was standing on the ground. I could do little as it was quite a way away but I picked up a stone from the roadside and threw it toward them as hard as I could. There was no way it would reach them but it did put the seagull off it's stride and it flew, partly away. The local bird took off and headed for the trees. It only flew a short way and then landed again. The seagull was flying around a way away but the road curved round toward them so as I walked the seagull finally flew away. The local bird did make the trees but I didn't see it any more. I hope it was not too injured.

Despite being in the woods, and their being plenty of brambles, I have never yet seen a rabbit. .

Or a fox, actually.

We have squirrels, rabbits, racoons, foxes, deer...even turkeys nearby! I saw a rabbit in the back yard this morning as I was opening the shades. A couple of nights ago, I stopped for a racoon scavenging in the middle of my lane. I just sat there and looked at him as he ambled away under a parked car.

They can be fun to watch, especially when you have a whole family of them that likes to visit. 

That is one advantage that I have noticed with the modern plastic wheelie bins we have. It would take a smart animal to get in. From what I have seen though racoons seem to be smart and bears are intelligent enough to know they could soon sort a bin out so maybe they wouldn't be quite so useful over there.

Wild turkeys walked across my front lawn again this morning, they are as tall as me at 5'3

Our very first morning in the sticks and we were chuffed when 3 turkeys came into our garden. They had wandered off the farm next door.

Actually yes they are but there are hunting seasons on them in both the spring and fall. Here in Florida they are everywhere. I see them just about daily.

I am sure the are Jen, they walked like they owned the streets.

We have a visitor this morning. He is a big boy, at least ten feet, probably more.

It's interesting to see the big carnivore and their weak, potential prey, in the same area. Obviously it happens. I wonder if the prey animals regard your garden as a sanctuary Karen.
