He probably meant it the same way when people say ditto.

If he meant it as loving himself, then I am sure it would have been a joke that you both might have chuckled at in the moment.

Some people feel uncomfortable saying the L word, so that will be a way they say it if someone says it to them first. I imagine that feeling might be seen more often in men, especially when it is another man saying it... brother or not. Maybe he will warm up to saying it back one day, but if not, then don't take it personally.

Men are notorious at showing emotion ansd saying I love you to another male is for some just a huge hurdle...

most say 'yeah you too mate' or something along those lines just to avoid the L word..

I think you need to relax you most likely surprised your brother and he was unsure or uncomfortable about using the L word..

The fact that he didnt ignore you or try to brush it off is a positive.
