Indeed, think of the horror of the twin towers and how much reaction that caused, now think... 10 times that amount are killed every year with guns and nothing has been done about it.

It would be an interesting comparison to compare the statistics with similar deaths etc for people living in police states such as Russia or China. Maybe it is safer to live in a none democratic country? I suspect not but the margins may be a lot closer than we realise.

I think it would be interesting if we could get true crime figures and that's the problem, both Russia and China tend to be a bit closed lipped about these kinds of things.

Would western media report them correctly anyway? We all know of media bias and government directives

I can barely watch anything on the news, without thinking "So what is the truth?"

Its interesting speaking more than one language, you see the same incident reported in sometimes very different ways depending on the country doing the reporting. .

We used t have a news prog every Friday called "The Friday alternative." It used to do that, but then it was dropped by the station. Apparently, it was not done professionally enough.
Cynical?

Looking back myself, I have to chuckle a little though about our local evening paper - The Lincolnshire Echo. I don't remember any real issues with sensationalising things as the media does now but they were very well know for getting their facts wrong. It was a standing joke with people I knew. In general though it was a far more informative read than any current publication.
