I saw that a few days ago!! I never heard of a disorder where people felt they were meant to be disabled.
What a way to live...
There was one in the UK, she wanted to have her spinal cord cut to take the use of her legs away. She was already in a wheelchair, but wanted it to be genuine.
I have also heard of plenty of cases of people wanting a leg removed as they are convinced they have three.
I saw a report from a american, who had his leg amputated after using a shotgun on it.
He said "It is great, I am now normal. Not someone who spends all day, every day, thinking that he wants a leg amputated."
It's pretty interesting. And I think since it only affects them, why not do it?
However, if this person has people who depend on them, that is a different story.
When I heard about this disorder, something popped into my mind.
I don't know how many of you ladies know this, but I am a firm believer in reincarnation and past lives. So it makes me wonder if maybe this person, and others like her, were like this in their past life, like perhaps this woman was blind all of her life in her past life and having sight is scary.
I do agree though that a psychiatrist shouldn't have helped her, because whether reincarnation is real or not, there is no definitive proof and this sounds like a classic mental disorder.
That is an interesting outlook. If reincarnation is real, then that would make sense as to why people are like that! Feeling like you should be blind because you were blind in your last life... how bizarre that would be... if only that really were the case for the sake of their sanity..
It's possible =p I thought about that, too. Feeling like you were born in the wrong body because you still feel like the gender you were in your last life! Regardless of the reason.... it's surely no way to live feeling that way.

Should the transgendered be described in this fashion?
I once read an article on reincarnation that brought up a theory that people who struggle with gender identity were a different gender in their past life, and that most souls keep to the same gender.

Good thinking, Heather......
I'm with you.
Let's round them up and hit them with sticks.
Tsk tsk, I wouldn't support them dying to not feel that way (unless that is what they truly want). I don't want to live in my own body most of the time, but I hope I won't be beaten with sticks =p Not yet at least!! Wait until I'm really fed up, then you can come at me with a stick.
