I spent this afternoon with a chainsaw. Our laburnum tree fell over. Fortunately there was no damage to our new fence, or the summer house.
I looked up pictures of the tree.. it looks pretty. Do you plan on replanting the same type in its place or something different?
We will get another, but probably place it elsewhere. Where it was did demarcate between where the fence used to be. So actually losing it makes the extended garden, seem more like 'ours'.

Everything happens for a reason ;p Glad it will turn out to work out for you.
When 2 of our backyard trees fell.. it wasn't for the better lol it left an emptiness lining our yard from the neighbor. It will take many years before our new shrubs/trees fill in the gaps.
Every time we get a storm, or high winds, the trees behind us lose a bough or two, and occasionally a tree will fall. Mostly silver birches, some are really old.

We have Leyland cypresses.. and apparently they like to fall over when they are tall ;p Ours fell because they became too heavy at the top with ice.

Those are just very large weeds. Our front hedge at the other house is all leylandi. It lookls awful as they were overtrimmed, and never recovered.

Yeah, they apparently never regrow anything... so once it looks empty it stays empty. Ours look awful because the person who planted them kind of grew too many intertwined, and they were all empty on the inside because of no sun, but now that 2 are missing, the emptiness is there on the ones that remain....

Ugh.. we have Japanese Beetles eating our crape myrtle
We are going out every couple of hours to pluck them off and throw them into soap water. They say that is the best way to try to get rid of them without using chemicals. They feed and mate every day or two.... so they can lay up to 60k eggs each in just 6 weeks. OMG WTF lol I am going to be quite busy for the next few weeks I guess... So far we have killed about 24 of them. Many of them were in the middle of mating, too, so that should help make a dent.
We are also going to purchase milky spores to introduce into the lawn.. it's supposed to help prevent the grubs from becoming adults, so that should help.
It can, but they might not die as fast as drowning... they start to burrow into the ground when they fall, too. I almost lost track of a couple that way lol
I also don't know what the soapy water would do to other bugs.. I don't mind the others, but these will eat your plants until they are destroyed, so I can't keep them around.

Have you checked out what their natural predators are?
"Research performed by many US extension service branches has shown pheromone traps attract more beetles than they catch.[13][14] Traps are most effective when spread out over an entire community, and downwind and at the borders (i.e., as far away as possible, particularly upwind), of managed property containing plants being protected. Natural repellents include catnip, chives, garlic, and tansy,[15] as well as the remains of dead beetles, but these methods have limited effectiveness.[16] Additionally, when present in small numbers, the beetles may be manually controlled using a soap-water spray mixture, shaking a plant in the morning hours and disposing of the fallen beetles,[14] or simply picking them off attractions such as rose flowers, since the presence of beetles attracts more beetles to that plant.[16]"

Yeah, but we don't have as many other than the obvious (birds). Their predators are in Japan, where they don't seem to be such a nuisance as they are here.
I never knew about them because we happened to have zero plants they prefer until now lol and I wanted to add some roses, too.. which they also like.. so I am getting my practice in now.

Yeah, we settled on the plucking them off method to not attract any more of them and to not accidentally harm anything else while trying to get rid of them. It's the best targeted method we can do it seems. Our crape myrtle isn't very big yet, so it's not so bad to keep up with for now... but in the future it could become harder if it's too big to really grab them off from deeper inside the plant.
We were going to get some type of pesticide for them (to be absorbed by the plant), but then we found out it could harm bees in the pollen even... so that is out!
I also read that you can plant "trap plants," such as geraniums. It's supposed to paralyze them if they eat it, and then you can scoop them up. I didn't plan on planting any of those... but now I might want to look into it.
