I don't like to fuss with annuals too much.. I much prefer perennials when it comes to planting in the ground. On my porch is the only place I will put an annual, and I will get a different type each year.
That makes more sense but I have had issues with them down here in Florida.
Just gotta find the right kinds for your area. Many people make the mistake of planting stuff that won't thrive because they like the way it looks... and some perennials will act as annuals if in the wrong environment.

I'll have to spend the time, which I currently have, and do a little research.
I think some of them will do better than others, but it looks as though they all at least have some buds growing. It is only their first year in the ground, so I don't expect them to be at peak performance ;p

The oak tree near our house is being cut down today. I feel sad and like I'm making the right decision all at once lol
What's the problem?
It's not like you to cut a tree down.
It was too close to the house is all. Our house is down a slope... and the tree is up the slope, so gravity would have helped it hit the house if it became uprooted.
We have seen these type of oak trees uprooted quite a bit around here after storms. It was just too scary and stress-inducing to leave it. A tree this massive would fall straight through the house! The storms have been getting worse over the years, so I felt like it was wise to cut it down before it had the chance to fall down one day.
I do plan on planting another tree nearby (a redbud) -- one that does not get nearly as big (or heavy) and would not damage the house much at all even if it did fall over onto it.
It's already so weird not having it. The other side of our front yard, most of the driveway, and part of our house (where the garage is) is so BRIGHT lol our entire front yard was pretty much in darkness because we have trees everywhere, but this is letting in a little more sun. The other side has 4 maple trees and 1 dogwood, so it's still very shady.
We had heatwave last week Heather, so the soil was very dry. My gardener increased the irrigation time to 15 minutes a day at 7AM. Now that the weather is back to high 70s to high 80s, we did 5 min but the soil looked dried so I increased to 10 min now. By mid day, the soil looks okay but it's never soaking wet or even wet wet.
I live in an area where clay soil is abundant so roses, bougainvilleas are thriving, I though cactus should not have any problems.
Just going by the pictures, I much prefer the brick wall. It looks more belonging. Of course, I might change my mind if I was there, in the garden, and saw it first hand, but just going by the pictures, I prefer this one.
Many years ago, I used to do a lot of gardening: growing things in the greenhouse and out of it. Putting a little pond into one corner, add a bench, where I sat every morning with my cup of coffee. Weeded and planted come rain or shine.
That was many years ago. Now I don't much use the garden. Both my husband and I are indoor people. We don't worship the sun, and we don't care to sit in the garden for hours on end or even for an hour. I like having garden simply because it gives me extra space from my neighbours. We have a sitting area in the garden, with a large wooden roof added, kind of like a beach hut but without walls, and a BBQ, which has never been used. LOL
I am an autumn and winter person. I love the short, gloomy, days, when it rains and storms a lot. When others get depressed in winter, I start to bloom.

It can probably stand to be dry sometimes, no? Clay usually stays a bit wetter, so you might get away with watering less. The surface of the soil can be dry but still be moist at the roots.

Do you think watering every other day will help?
I would experiment a bit to see how it does. Might be able to go longer in between sometimes, unless it is not established yet. I don't know too much about cacti, though! I do know it can take most plants 1-2 years to become established enough to be more drought resistant.

Everything is so pretty in autumn and spring, those are my favorite seasons because of the color changes. Well, now that I do not live in South Florida. Florida pretty much summer all year lol
