Menopause Predisposes a Fifth of Women to Alzheimer’s
IN BRIEF
Estrogen regulates brain metabolism in young women, orchestrating the transport, uptake and conversion to energy of glucose.
Declining estrogen levels during menopause alter brain metabolism, precipitating temporary cognitive changes as the brain taps alternative fuel sources, possibly the fatty acids that protect neurons and their connections.
In a fifth of women, these changes appear to lead, some two decades later, to Alzheimer’s disease. Carriers of the so-called Alzheimer’s gene are particularly vulnerable.
Physical exercise, diets low in sugar and fats and, conceivably but controversially, hormone therapy are likely to help protect these women from acquiring the disease.
I say this because I act like a crazy person with no incoming hormone. I get threatened with job loss because my temper gets so bad. Plus, I smell to hell & back. Doc told the nurse to tell me I'd have to ride it out. I told her I wasn't riding out.

Look into it thoroughly, before making your mind up.

You're gonna laugh. The dr. at the time didn't exactly give me the option. I was on it for several years. They had me on a full dose of Premarin for about 5 yrs since I had an early hysterectomy. Then I decided to try weening off. I went about a yr maybe 2 without it. Then a few months ago I started going through a 2nd menopause. I didn't know I was gonna hafta to do this twice. And I was getting in trouble for smelling like BO that I had no control over. After fighting tooth and nail for it, he finally agreed and gave me a prescription for Estrace. It's not as good but it's better than nothing.
