Our family tradition is buying plain coloured glass baubles. Then we scratch the paint off of them with a needle making them personal, and dating them.
For instance, one year I scratched Cherry Loves Julia on one.

aw thats cute, we never had any xmas traditions at home, not that i remember any way. me & sissy used to open one present on xmas eve.
i cant wait for M to be older and start new traditions. i have just seen something this year called 'elf on a shelf' basically u buy a small stuffed elf and place it in random places through the night and the next morning your child has to see 'where the elf has put its self' im also going to do a christmas eve box which will be similar to me & sissy opening a gift, i will maybe add pjs, slippers. hot choc, treats a christmas movie and maybe other little things.
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice then sit back and watch as the world wonders how you did it.
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait ‘til tomorrow For babies grow up we've learnt to our sorrow, So quiet down cobwebs Dust go to sleep I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep
Hi Lady,s has anyone been brave enough to go christmas shopping yet I havn,t it,s less then 66days till christmasday so any of you lady,s been so brave to go christmas shopping you never know we might even have some snow for christmas day
Ive always prefered Christmas to Xmas, where did that come from anyway?
Not that Im religious but it just always seemed right..
I do buy cards in the January sales , ok Im a tightwad but really the prices of stamps these days are so high that any saving on the cards helps soften the blow of the postal charges,
** Ok so I asked the question and then decided to go and find the answer, Xmas is not as modern as I thought nor it seems as secular as I thought,,
I can't help calling it xmas, and I blame those people trying to spoil xmas for me by constantly chanting stuff like "The true message of christmas is always being forgotten, it is a religious festival!"
christmas isn,t that bad i know it,s mainley for children these days but it can be for adults too,you know buying presents you know muppet Be nice if it did snow for christmas day Cassie then it would be all twinckley and pretty jengurl. Theres nothing wrong in buying christmas in the january sales ive still got some left over from last year so i will use them then it will save me buying some for this year what a bargain
in all honestly i dont do presents, ive bought my OH presents a few times, nothing major and him the same, but when we moved in together we didnt bother and i cant really financially afford buying gifts for people, theres just too many, i have a sissy and a brother, OH has 2 sisters he talks to i have 2 neices & a nephew, OH has 3 neices and a nephew, then theres parents, grandparents, cousins, aunties and uncles. its just not fair to buy some and not others, so we dont. We obv buy for M and no we havent started yet!! i think IF i get this job i will begin earlier, buy gifts for people deserving (that sounds bad but i mean the people who have been there for us and helped us out when needed) & kiddies and by then M will have more understanding of Christmas.
i dont like to call it xmas either, i only ever do if i really cba to type Christmas LOL

There are three phases to xmas.
1. You are a kid and people make it great for you 2. You enjoy xmas through children's eyes 3. You enjoy xmas without the assistance of children.
There is no doubt that 1 is by far the best, followed by 2.
But 3 is still a reason to smile, and we must not forget that.
I am at stage 3, and waiting for my daughter to assist me with stage 2, but I will still have a good time.
What Ive seen as the year pass is that traditions we had have had to change Im at stage 3 now and OH and I are sort of looking for a new way to celebrate.
When the children were very little I would put up the tree at night and when they came down in the morning I would have the curtains closed and only the tree lights on.. That morning they alway had a current bun for breakfast. On Christmas day after lunch we would go to OH parents and they would get gifts from Grandma and Grandad. On boxiing day we would go to my mums and have tea there with gifts from nana.
As the children got older and we moved away we had no family so we had an open door policy on boxing day and my children would invite people they (kinda) knew who didnt have family to celebrate with to come to ours. I could have anything between 6 and 20 people arriving during the day all staying for something to eat, a game of cards, a chat a drink etc.
Now my children are grown and left home and those people they knew are also gone , moved on have families of their own etc etc..
So now its just me and OH and Christmas can seem a bit like any other weekend.. We need something special for us while OH can still enjoy it.. So Im open to ideas..
I have heard people say they get a lot of xmas joy helping out at soup kitchens and the like.
Yep and its something I had always thought of doing but with OH being ill its not really an option.
I still bake cakes for several old people I know who dont have that much and all my clients get a gift. I know many of them dont see family from one year to the next so even a little something is gratefully received.
One old guy is French he has had the most exciting life he was in the army became a presidential bodyguard and represented France in the winter games at bobsled way back in the 1960's. Now he is a lonely old man on a minimum pension who suffers PTSD so yes I do spoil him a bit last year I baked for him and he got a new scarf and gloves from us.. He isnt a client (he couldnt afford home help) but every wedensday I do his little bit of shopping for him so that he doesnt have to struggle with bottles or bags of potatoes.
My mother is coming for Christmas...We are going to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. NY is a mad house at Christmas but it can really put you in the Christmas spirit!

I already bought for my nephews (game cards), but working on my niece.
Bro yet, no
Mom, no
Dad, oh yeah (the greatest)
Younger sisters; maybe I'll just let them keep all the clothes they take from me
Older sister, not yet, she's hard one.
As much as I like all the Xmas pageantry, Thanksgiving is more meaningful to me.

I saw that show like twice, when I was maybe 7 or 8, and again when maybe 12.

I still didn't buy any presents, but I actually have a but more time left than you all do, as we start the celebration on New Years Eve and then we have Christmas on the 7th of January. Anyway I have to start doing it as it's just a little more than a month left.
I've already bought tickets to operette on the 28th for us an in laws. So I can say I did at least something...

As far as I know we just had something mixed up with the calendar, that's why we also celebrate Old New Year's Eve on the 13th of January.
We actually celebrate something almost all the winter. There are lots of jokes that there's only one long night from the December 31 till January 14, as everyone are so drunk all this time they can hardly remember something afterwards...

This is what we do.
It's like our calendar moved for 13 days someday, though I'm not sure if I'm not writing nonsence))) Anywat people in Ukraine are always using the slightest possibility to have a holiday, so Old New Year is a great occasion for us and we really drink a lot... I'm quite a comunicative person and still I know only 2 people who don't drink any alcohol at all.

Drinking my morning coffee without any sweets I've remembered about our I suppose the only New Year tradition.
My mom always puts 3 sweets for me and for my sister on the New Year tree since it's in the house, in the morning untill we both are sleeping. Now she does that for my husband too, but not for my son yet, as he's too small for candies yet. We don't live together, so when we come to her place on weekends we have a full tree of sweets waiting for us... I always gain few kilos during those holidays...
